village radio youth internship

Elk Rapids, MI – Village Radio, an FCC-approved community radio station soon to be broadcasting at 99.7 FM in Elk Rapids, announces an open call for youth DJs. Children and teens ages 7 to 17 are invited to apply individually or as a group to host their very own radio program. This unique opportunity, offered as part of a grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, allows young voices to take the mic and share their creativity with the community.

Selected applicants will receive comprehensive training on studio equipment, including broadcasting, recording devices, and software, as well as speech coaching and guidance on FCC compliance. They will also be paired with experienced mentors who will provide ongoing support, feedback, and guidance throughout their training and apprenticeship to ensure success as radio program hosts. Programs can range from music and talk shows to news, radio dramas, or other unique formats that align with Village Radio’s mission to engage and inspire listeners.

Youth DJs will begin as interns of the station for the first six months, where they will gain foundational skills and hands-on experience. After this initial period, they will enter a six-month apprenticeship in Broadcast Media Arts, delving deeper into the art of radio production.

Upon completing the year-long program, apprentices will have the opportunity to apply as permanent program hosts and officially join the Village Radio team.

Applicants must be between the ages of 7 and 17 and reside in Antrim County.  Applications will be reviewed and considered as they are submitted

Applications can be submitted online at www.997fm.org/internship-apply

Village Radio is a community radio station located in the Chalfonte Theatre, home of the Elk Rapids Cinema. Non-music programming, such as news, talk shows, and radio documentaries, will also be streamed live on YouTube and Facebook, bringing an interactive and engaging platform to listeners.

Whether it’s curating playlists, delivering news updates, producing radio dramas, or leading meaningful discussions, this program is designed to empower the next generation of broadcasters.

"We're looking for passionate, creative, and curious young minds who want to share their ideas with the world," says Stephen McDonald, Village Radio Station Manager. "This is a rare chance for kids and teens to learn the ins and outs of broadcasting while building confidence and having fun."

This program is made possible through a grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, helping provide young people with the tools and support they need to succeed in the world of radio and broadcasting.

YOUTH RADIO INTERNSHIPS

MEET DJ NICKY.

Nicholas “DJ Nicky” is born and raised right here in beautiful Elk Rapids.  He is currently a 4th grader at Lakeland Elementary, and class President.  He loves and plays both Basketball and Football.  One of his favorite hobbies, besides music, is fishing.

DJ Nicky appreciates all types of music, but he is passionate about hip hop.  Not only is he an avid listener, but he would like to produce his own music one day and has even spent a little time in the recording studio.

Thanks to our donor, MACC, Village Radio is currently able to host 4 youth DJ interns ranging from ages 8-14. Our station manager Stephen McDonald has been integral to this program. Read more about Stephen in our FCC approved application.
